About KPU's Music Department
KPU launched the Music Minor in 2023, with the help of Wake Up! Festival Organizer and Music Department Chair Gordon Cobb. The department offers classes in music production, world music, music composition, music technology, and collaboration.
The Wake Up! Social Justice Music Festival is a class offered by the department, to engage students across different faculties and departments with music. It was first offered in the Spring 2023 semester, and has been taking off since.
The program aims to provide students with tangible skills for the music industry today. The department aims to give students a grounding in contemporary practices, and caters to those interested in expressive cultural traditions from across the include, including both popular and world music. It features an open and inclusive approach to the study of music that embraces broad perspectives on materials, context, and presentative, and uses contemporary digital technologies to develop an understanding of music creation and performance.
